Engagement photos are a beautiful way to capture the love and excitement leading up to your wedding. They serve as lasting memories, and with a little creativity and planning, you can make them truly special. Here are some tips and ideas to help you create unique and meaningful engagement photos.
Choosing the Right Location for Engagement Photos
The location of your engagement photos plays a significant role in the overall feel and message of the images. I'm always here to suggest the best location for the time of year. With years of experience and knowledge of when the local flora and fauna are in bloom and where to find them, my advice is that if you're happy to trust in my vision, sit back, relax and let me pick somewhere for you. However, some couples do like to have their shoot in a place they feel connected to. If you want to choose your location, consider places that resonate with both of you as a couple. Here are a few ideas
Meaningful locations: Did they propose in a beautiful place that will be propose etched upon your heart? If somewhere holds meaning for you, you will cherish the photos even more.
Nature Parks/gardens: Scenic landscapes, flowers, and greenery can provide a romantic backdrop. Think about a local park or a botanical garden.
New Forest: Being based in the New Forest, I may be a little biased but the forest at Golden hour is one of my most favourite locations for a couples photoshoot. The way the light filters through the trees can be just magical.
Beach: I'm lucky enough to live by the sea as well as being in the forest. While the beach might not be the best location on a wintry, windy day or a busy sweltering, summer day, the beach is another favourite location during those late summer evenings.
Personal Spaces: Consider shooting in a place that means something to you, like the location of your first date or a favorite coffee shop.

Choosing the Right Time for Engagement Photos
Timing can significantly impact the quality of your engagement photos. The golden hour, which is shortly after sunrise or before sunset, gives a soft, warm lighting that adds magic to your photos. Here’s why timing matters:
Natural Light: The right natural light can help your photos appear more vibrant and flattering. I always like to shoot at golden hour if I can. The light is low and flattering and the backlighting and flaring in images can create enchanting looking photos.
Fewer Crowds: Scheduling your shoot during off-peak times can help you avoid unwanted distractions and background activity.
Early morning on a cloudy day: Guess what, I don't hate clouds. Clouds add drama and I would take clouds over full midday sun any day. They act as a natural diffuser and create flattering light on the subject.
Make sure to discuss with your photographer to ensure they can capture the best light.

Is an Engagement Photoshoot Worth It?
A common question many couples have is whether an engagement photoshoot is worth the investment. Here are a few reasons why it might be:
Capturing Your Love Story: Engagement photos serve as a beautiful narrative of your relationship journey. It captures a moment in time just before your wedding day.
Getting Comfortable in Front of the Camera: Many people feel awkward being photographed. An engagement shoot allows you to practice poses and get accustomed to your photographer’s style.
Wonderful Keepsakes: These images can be used for save-the-dates, your wedding website, or simply as cherished mementos.
In short, investing in an engagement photoshoot can enhance your wedding experience and provide stunning visuals that tell your love story.
Planning Your Engagement Photoshoot
Effective planning can elevate your engagement photos. Here are a few practical tips:
Wardrobe Selection: Choose outfits that reflect your style as a couple. Coordinating colours can add visual appeal without looking overly matched. Avoid busy patterns that can distract from your expressions and emotions. Neutral always look good and will make you stand out when against the backdrop of trees and flowers. Find a colour wheel! If you are being photographed in blue flowers, yellow id the opposite to blue on the colour wheel and is very complimentary.
Props and Accessories: Incorporating personal items such as books, musical instruments, or even your pet can enhance the story your photos tell. Think about what represents your relationship.
Engage with Each Other: Your connection is what makes each photo special. Act natural, laugh, and interact in a way that feels genuine to both of you.

After planning and shooting, think about final touches to make your photos stand out:
Editing Style: Discuss the editing style with your photographer. Whether you prefer bright and airy or moody and dramatic, make sure you communicate your preferences.
